Today our baby is one year old. It is amazing to me how fast the year went. Pat and I decided to take the day off today to celebrate with Lillian. Feeling sentimental, I had to watch the videos we took at the hospital the day she was born. Lillian enjoyed watching them too. She pointed and said, "baby, baby!" She clearly did not realize that was her!
We took her in for her one year check-up today as well. Dr. B was not too pleased we made the appointment on her actual birthday. He didn't think a finger prick and a shot was a very good present. She is exactly 21 lbs and 28 1/4 inches long. This puts her at 60% for height and 50% for weight. We told him about how she isn't really crawling still and he said we should come back in one month if things don't change. He can then assess the situation to see if anything needs to be done. Obviously this is not comforting news to hear. We are really hoping and praying that all the time and effort we have been putting in to helping her be more mobile will pay off soon. The doctor did say though that her vocabulary was above average! We kind of figured this because our kid talks so much! I guess the average one year old says about 2 words besides mama and dada. We listed about 10 words that she says regularly. She is also really into copying what you say. My new favorite is her attempt at saying belly button ("blleee buttteee"). She did well with the shot this time but I will say it was easier back when she was little. There were real tears this time and also that long pause where they aren't breathing because they are crying so hard. I hate that!
After seeing the doctor, we went to Toys R Us and got her birthday present, a make-shift ball pit! We spent 18 dollars total for the balls and the kiddie pool. Ball pits go for at least $30 so we were proud of ourselves for being thrifty. After getting the present, we took Lillian to the Como Zoo. It wasn't her first time seeing animals, but she sure did enjoy the trip. We also swung by the conservatory-hence the pretty flower pictures.
Now we're back at home and playing in the ball pit. I am still in amazement that we are parents sometimes. When looking back at the pictures from a year ago (where we are all smiley and holding our brand new baby), Pat and I both said the same thing, "Those people (meaning us) look so young and stupid." It is true. This last year has taught us so much. Now we are anxious to see what these toddler years are all about!
